Technology and platforms

Building technology that supports better research

Publishing research at global scale requires technology built for science. Frontiers publishes over 85,000 manuscripts a year across 222 journals and around 1,700 specialty sections, connecting a community of over 3.7 million researchers, editors, and reviewers.

Supporting that scale, while maintaining rigorous standards and keeping every editorial decisions with a person, requires more than off-the-shelf software. That is why we build our own technology.

Our editorial platforms, data infrastructure, research integrity systems, and AIRA, our AI review assistant, are designed around the needs of our community. Together, they help make publishing more efficient, strengthen quality and integrity and create a better experience throughout the research journey.

For us, innovation is more than a single product or technology. It spans engineering, data, artificial intelligence, editorial design, and responsible governance.

"I strongly recommend Frontiers to prospective authors and editors; they're doing really innovative things in the review and publication process, which leads to publishing high-quality content through rigorous, interactive peer review."

What we're building

We develop tools and systems that support researchers, reviewers, and editors across the publishing process. Four systems make up our technology stack:

Submissions portal: the starting point for researchers submitting their work to Frontiers. Our submission technology guides researchers through manuscripts, affiliations, abstracts, and keywords, helping them enter the peer review process as smoothly as possible.

Digital editorial office: the operational backbone of our publishing platform. It manages articles, editors, and Research Topics through their lifecycle and is used daily by Frontiers teams and external editors around the world.

Research Topic management platform: our dedicated platform gives Topic Editors and editorial teams one place to manage contributors and track every submitted manuscript through review.

Review forum: our review forum brings authors, reviewers and editors together in one digital environment. Authors can respond directly to reviewer comments, revisions can be discussed transparently, and Editors retain oversight throughout the process, supporting a more collaborative and constructive approach to peer review.

Technology beyond the publishing platform

Our technology extends well beyond manuscript workflows. Together with specialist expertise and rigorous publishing standards, these systems help strengthen the integrity of the scientific record before, during and after publication.

Responsible AI and governance

Where we use AI - in manuscript screening, scope classification, fraud detection - it operates under one non-negotiable rule: AI flags, humans decide.

This principle extends beyond AI to every system we build. Every finding raised by AIRA goes to an editor, reviewer or our research integrity team who decides what happens next. Governance isn’t a layer added on top of our technology; it’s a constraint we design into it from the start.

“What I really love is that Frontiers has implemented a set of automatic quality checks. So a paper submitted undergoes more than 40 mainly AI-based checks before it’s actually on the desk of any editor.”

Building what comes next

Scientific publishing continues to change rapidly. Research volumes are growing, and AI is transforming how knowledge is created and assessed. At the same time, integrity threats are getting more sophisticated, and researchers expect digital tools that are intuitive, connected, and responsive to how they work. Our technology has to evolve with them.

We are continuing to invest in the next generation of Frontiers’ publishing platforms, data infrastructure, AI-assisted tools, and research integrity technology — building systems that support science at greater scale while strengthening the experience, quality, and transparency of research publishing.

94% of authors rate their peer review experience good or excellent, and 95% rate article quality the same.

The people behind the technology

Behind every system on this page is a team that works closely with the authors, Editors, and Reviewers who use it — and many of them come from research backgrounds themselves. Here, some of them explain what they build and why.

In this video, Alex explains how his role focuses on building products that support research and publishing teams in their day-to-day work.

Careers and opportunities

We’re hiring engineers, data scientists, product specialists, and integrity researchers to build the next generation of Frontiers’ platform - across editorial systems, data infrastructure, and AI. If you want your work to ship into a live pipeline handling thousands of manuscripts a year, we'd love to hear from you.
